About Guitarist Rebecca J. Brock |
|
Beginnings
|
Rebecca J. Brock was born in Lawton, Oklahoma - the second of four
children. She grew up in Duncan, Oklahoma, where she
graduated from high school. She is of Choctaw descent and is a
registered member of that tribe.
Her Native American heritage comes primarily from her father's family --
her paternal grandmother was a full-blood Choctaw. Her mother's family is of
undocumented Cherokee descent from her maternal grandmother.
As she grew she knew herself as Jeannie Hanks. It was not until she
attended college that she became acquainted with her "real" name -
Rebecca Jean. She was married and has two grown daughters and a
granddaughter.
Her daughters have inherited her love and passion for all types of
music. Both played woodwind instruments while they were in school, but
neither have indicated an interest in stringed instruments. It remains
to be seen what the granddaughter will do musically!
She began to play guitar while in high school. She studied finger
style playing with
Mark Cruz
during the early 1990's and more recently
has studied classical guitar with Glenn Rosales.

Influences
|
Rebecca's father was an accomplished guitarist who played country music,
but was an excellent rock and roll musician. He was
absent from her life for the most part, but encouraged her to play when
he was around.
Her brother, Cecil Hanks, focused his time and energy on music with his
wife Julie and together they formed a classic rock and country band.
They were enjoying some successes when his untimely death occurred in
1988 - just a few months before Rebecca graduated from college.
She credits her brother and father with demonstrating the importance of
showmanship - they were musicians who loved to perform for people and
knew how to play what the people wanted to hear.
Among her favorite artists, composers, and performers are Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Jimmy Page,
Mark Cruz, Roy Shaw, Joe Satriani, Danny Taylor, Francisco Tarrega, Bonnie Raitt,
Nancy Wilson, and Janis Joplin.

Current
|
Rebecca resides in a small city north of Oklahoma City. She enjoys
performing acoustic sets for small audiences in Central Oklahoma venues.
She has made some efforts at composing, but feels she is a much better
lyricist than a composer. She enjoys the feedback she gets from her
audience when she knows she has connected with them. Each time she
performs, she feels she has gained something new, perhaps a new level of
understanding of her craft.
